Ban-the-straws movement

14 Aug

Since last April 2012, Miami has banned the plastic straws!!
In theory, no more sipping in south Beach … in theory! I wasn’t aware of this law.
The idea is to clean the beaches and to avoid plastic straws to end up in the sand and ocean.

The straw consumption is high in the US, daily consumption of plastic straws is about 500 million a day!

Let’s check my daily consumption of plastic straws:

  • One homemade banana/chia seeds smoothie to kick the day, one straw.
  • One pineapple black tea at Starbucks in the morning, one straw.
  • One lunch at Moshi Moshi, one plastic straw for my ice green tea.
  • One charcoal sesame bubble tea at Mimi’s in the afternoon, another straw.
  • One fresh coconut water that I open myself, one more straw.

Without forcing, I used 5plastic straws a day … at least …

not cool for the environment, the turtles, the fish, the ocean …

What’s the solution?

  • Drink from the glass … why not but I like sipping …
  • Drink from my Klean Kanteen bottle, can do. Starbucks would fill it in with pleasure and it goes in the dishwasher.
  • Or drink from reusable straws (bamboo, metal or glass straws), I don’t like it because it’s very difficult to wash and keep clean.

Or … I can try paper straws!

While in Orlando at Mickey’s house (Animal Kingdom), I discovered the paper straws from Aardvark . And I liked it.

Aardvark paper straws are FDA and EU-approved and decompose themselves in 30-60 days (depending on the model).

So here’s my shopping list now at Aardvark,

  • one Giant straw for my smooth,
  • the Jumbo for the ice tea
  • and the Colossal for the bubble tea.

Now, you know what you need to do, there’s one “clean” straw for each occasion so #stopsucking on plastic straw and go for #strawlessocean and my sushis will thank you!

Also, check out the edible cups from Loliware (as seen on Shark Tank).

PS: the paper straws are not really intended for warm beverages.

Xmas list 2016

9 Dec

It’s that period of the year again when you give “discrete” hints to  close ones about what you would like under the Christmas tree … So mom, please pick the hints …

1. The best hoodie ever! Made in America by American Giant … for the chilly nights in Miami, $89

2. I eat sushis almost everyday, so I need chopsticks made with … recycled skateboards, $25

3. The brand new pocketable backpack  “Azimut Pack” … technical and versatile … is so for me, from Triple Aught Design, $120

4. I need a bedside lamp but no any lamp … the very bright and design portable Lumio light I saw at the Moma NYC will be perfect, $190

5. I’m always lost without a Philippe screwdriver, a cutting hook or a SIM card pick … it’s a bracelet! The “Thread” bracelet is the first wearable multi-tool by Leatherman, $165

6. To improve my skateboarding skills, I think that custom Vans will help … $90 for the Old Skool with suede.

7. I would fancy a painting of myself skating by artist Le Closier to hang above the chimney

8. I would like a furry friend … a dog from the shelter Urgent Dogs Of Miami

Have a wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah!!

Wrestling in the mud or spreading green clay?

Wrestling in the mud or spreading green clay?
Recently I started racing pumptracks, now I’m testing my balance and coordination doing tricks with my new skateboard …
You don’t make omelet without breaking eggs … I’m the egg … I get road rash, cuts and of course bruises … not good during the bermuda season in sunny Miami … I needed a solution … and I did found it with the green clay paste from the Clayers!

Let’s talk to Thibault (aka Tibs) the founder of the Clayers.
Who are you Tibs? How did you discover green clay?
I’m a professional skateboarder (@tibsparise) and I have been using the french green clay in France when I got injured. I healed up my knee, rashes and other wounds. I discovered it from a friend.
But since I’m in the USA, I couldn’t find this product I trust and love, so I decided to make it and share it.

What’s the green clay?
The French Green Clay is technically mud, but it is really rich in minerals and help the healing of injuries and skin issues. It’s natural and has been used for centuries, Cleopatra, soldiers, and more people have been using it.
French green clay is composed of different clays, illite, kaolin, montmorrillonite, bentonite and/or others.

Where is it coming from?
You can find green clay all around the World, but the one we use and have is from a volcanic area in France. It’s certified USDA Organic, it’s composed of 3 differents pure clay, which makes it unique and the purest in the world. Our clay is even scientifically proven. We have been picky on the choice of our ingredients, we care about quality.

How do you apply it?
The application is different as a cream, you have to apply a thick layer on the wound or skin condition, and let it dry. The more you apply, the more it absorbs and remove toxins. Just do not let it dry out on your face.

What can it heal?
It can heal inflammations, road rash, joint pain, bruises, sore muscle and more, also skin condition like acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburns and burns.

What are the range of products available?
Right now we have

  • the Classic Clayer ready to use paste that you can use on everything we said above, it’s composed of our high quality French Green Clay and Alkaline water from Carlsbad California (6floz for $24)
  • the French Green Clay powder (20oz for $49)is available for your DIY facemask or poultice.

Thanks Tibs, this clay seems very interesting.
Actually, I’ve been testing it for some weeks now and I love it!
The great thing about the green clay is that it works too if you don’t skate … sprain ankle, tired muscles, … it will work miracles for anyone.
Do I like it? Yes!
Because it’s organic, because it’s easy to use and because it works!

Thanksgiving is around the corner and our friends from the Clayers are offering 40% OFF for Black Friday Week!

The polar bear has his very own bottle, me too!

Photo 19-03-2014 5 24 28 pmI love bottles, I carry mine everyday from home to the office and back home.
I also love to have my bottle when I travel.
My collection includes
. 2 aluminium Kleen Kantean (one double-wall, one regular simple wall),
. one Bryta with a filter,
. one spill-free Contigo,
and since a few days, a super cool Polar Bottle!

Again, I left home without my bottle, I was desperate and needed a bottle for the next 10 days in hot and sunny Miami. I couldn’t buy just any bottle! I needed a cool bottle that I would keep using back home.
After “a little benchmark of the market”, my choice went for the Polar Bottle.
A double-wall plastic bottle with a cool design but also practical and optimized for the best usage.
The characteristics of the Polar Bottle are the following
. light because of plastics,
. safe for your health because BPA and phthalate-free,
. dishwasher-safe (put in the top rack),
. freezer-safe,
. easy to maintain thanks to a removable valve,
. spill-free, and I tested it in my backpack where it’s laying on the bottom full of liquid and not a drop!

It’s not only a cheap ($10,95 for the 20 ounces) but also a trusted and stylish bottle.
