AirPods in my ears … part2

24 May

Let’s go further with those AirPods!!

Hey Siri! If your iPhone or iPad is hooked on a plug or portable battery, just say “Hey Siri” to start the conversation.

Find my AirPods! Use the well known, “Find my phone” app on iPhone/iPad or hop on the internet on a computer and type iCloud.com to log in.

All your apple devices will appear on a map.

You’ll be able to make noise on your AirPods to find your buds.

Beware, it only works if the AirPods are NOT in the case … if you lose the charging case, you’ll be up for a $69 replacing case.

AirPods and Apple Watch are bff. The Apple Watch is very handy to skip, turn the volume up and down.

Or you tell Siri “volume up”, “skip song”, “volume down”, “pause music”, “play music”.

Who is calling? The phone calls are announced in my AirPods … handy.

Go to settings/phone/announce calls and explore the options.

After a few weeks, I really love my AirPods and I wouldn’t trade them for another headset because

  • they are light and don’t fall from my ears,
  • the sound is great and everyone hears me clearer than with my other headsets,
  • the autonomy is good even for heavy users like me thanks to its charging case,

A great buy for sure!!

But still there’s a huge downside. What do I do with this AirPods charging case? How not to lose it?

I first tried to tight it with a Betterband and a carabiner from Niteize. Looks a little bit too much DIY …

Then, I browse the web and found lots of silicone skins for the charging case … cute and protective for the case but it was just a skin … what about my losing issue, dust, water and fall protection … some more browsing and I found the Catalyst case!

Click to order and pay. The Catalyst case is on the way … it was just delivered and carrying now my AirPods all over without the stress of losing the case.

  • Waterproof? Yes up to 3.3.ft/1m,
  • Scratch proof ? Yes, 360degrees protection,
  • Drop proof? Yes up to 4ft/1,2m

Cherry on the cake, the cover glows in the dark! Love it.

Good to know, I still can reach the pairing button through the thin silicon wrap around the AirPods case.

To get my buds when I’m not on the move I just pull both side down and leave it like that … it’s my standby mode.
I didn’t like the provided carabiner and I switched for the Slidelock from Niteize (the gates are closed independently thanks to the plastic sliders). Now I’m almost sure I won’t lose it.

AirPods in my ears

26 Apr

They just landed! And it was a long way … 5 weeks … 5 weeks to fly from Shanghai to Sennan to Memphis then Fort Lauderdale and now Miami!
So was it worth the wait?

I’ve been testing them for the past few days and … you’ll see.

The pairing
… can’t be easier just open the little white box and let the magic work … boom you are connected.
Put the AirPods in your ears and here you go … music, phone calls, Siri

The music
, seamless the music starts when the AirPods are in your ears.

Take one pod out and the music stops.
Put it back in your ear and the music starts again.

Wants to set the volume, skip a song, switch the playlist?
Then you’ll have to go through your phone or your Apple Watch. You can use Siri, I gave it a chance and its working ok … but you can deactivated Siri and replaced it with play/stop when you double tap the AirPod while in your ear. (Go to settings/general/Bluetooth and tap the i next to your AirPods).

The talking
, because a phone is also about talking … people hear me clearer than with my previous Bluetooth headset.

Why?
I guess its because each AirPod has 2 mics one at the top for noise cancellation and one at the bottom for the voice recognition.
Clever and that works.

The autonomy
.
It’s a big problem for me as I may have 2 hours long conference calls as well as I’m listening to music while I’m working or skateboarding.

Autonomy is key!

The AirPods are supposed to a 5 hours autonomy on a single battery charge.
Cool, but not enough for a full work day.

The trick comes with the charging case which gives up to 24 hours extra battery life.

Also another trick to stay on top of your autonomy is to use one AirPod then put the other AirPod back in its charging case … you’ll double the autonomy.  Be aware that when one AirPod is charging in its case, the other one in your ear plays music and calls in stereo. Neat.

Good to know, 15′ in the charging case give a 3 hours boost of battery life.

Any regrets?

NO! I love it, it’s paired with my iPad and iPhone 6 and it works perfectly!!

The only downside is the size
It’s small, small pods and small charging case … easy to lose … I guess I’ll have to be careful. I safely store the charging case in my watch pocket.
F.Y.I. you can replace the lost charging case for $69

Oh it’s THE O!

8 Sep

the OHow many times do you leave home in the morning, a little bit in a hurry, and you forget something you really need and you have to come back home? For me, the reasons of my early comeback can be that I forgot

  • the external battery for my phone,
  • my headphones,
  • my keys,
  • my wallet,
  • the badge for the office … and this is the short list

the O and it's key ringBasically, there’s always something we forgot at home that forces us to go back and get it.
So far, I have one TILE and it’s cool, but it is only really useful when I realise I don’t have my keys on me.
I only really use it for my keys as it is a bit clunky for anything else. And it only helps me see where I left my keys once I realise I have already lost them. At this point it is already a bit late, and I could be very far away from them.

What if there way something that could help you remember all your essentials before the morning departure? And proactively tell you in the very moment you were losing or forgetting them?

This device is called THE O and yes it’s another Bluetooth tag, but not only!
the O in action

  • THE O is  waterproof
  • and has an battery autonomy of 18 months
  • it everal accessories in the pack such as adhesives and a beautiful keychain accessory for keys and bags
  • You can sew it onto fabrics, perfect for a jacket or scarf or even umbrella
Chase It because
  • THE O creates a virtual leash between you and your belongings. The objects you don’t want to leave behind.
  • THE O will warn you the moment you are about to leave an item behind so you do not lose or forget it.
  • THE O knows when you are in a safe place so you do not get any alerts unnecessarily (at home or in the office for example)

The O is now on Kickstarter and it’s time to invest in this bright idea!

PS: You can even sew the O on your clothes!!

Battle in my ears !

16 Feb

Powerbeats by DreLike you, I have 2 ears, one phone and one iPad.
I don’t like holding my iPhone to my ear … I can’t play games, take notes, … while in conversation … That’s why I always use earphones.
I have the Yurbuds ($69) when I workout at the gym. They are waterproof and won’t fall during the effort thanks to the twist and lock system. The buds in silicone are pleasant to wear, easy to wear them all day long.
BUT there’s the wire which is always tangled … not cool.

I also use the New Era by Jawbone ($99), a super light bluetooth earpiece. Great to wear all day long, listening to music and talking to my contacts. This is a great earpiece that can be connected to up to 8 devices (the New Era will switch from one phone to another to take the call, I love it!). But it’s so tiny that I have to be careful not to lose it.
The autonomy is only 4 hours … a little bit short if you are a heavy user …

I’ve been recently introduced to the Powerbeats Bluetooth headset ($199) and I must admit I LOOOVE it!

Powerbeats by Dre Powerbeats by Dre Powerbeats by Dre

The round the ear solves the issue of the popping out buds while running. Checked!

No more tangle and knots, the headset is bluetooth. Checked!

The headset comes with 3 different sizes and shapes of buds. After some tests, I found the ones fitting my inner ear. I can wear it all day long. Keep it in while talking. When I take them off, I leave it around my neck and it stays put.

The autonomy is 6 hours. Enough for a full day at work with a mix of listening to the radio whole on the way to the office and back home as well as conference calls. The Powerbeats are fully charged in about 90 minutes, 15 minutes of charging time will give an extra hour of listening to the music.
Checked!

The cable linking both earpieces is made of silicon. While doing sport I wear it on the back of my neck, while talking on the phone I put in front of me to have the mic closer to my mouth.

So who wins the battle ? The Yurbuds, the New Era or the Powerbeats ? …
The Powerbeats because it replaces all my earpieces for my daily uses: talking, listennning to music, skateboarding, … I kept my Yurbuds while on the plane when watching tv shows.

PS: little downside of the Powerbeats is the fact that the headset can only be linked to one bluetooth device at a time … call me picky … still I love my Powerbeats!

Also, if you watch TV shows or movies with your wireless Beats, be aware that there will be a delay between what you watch and what you hear. I listen to music and talk on the phone with my Beats so I don’t mind.
A bit annoying though. 😦

She knows the way and whispers in my ear!

iPhone 5, I travel a lot and don’t know each new place. I love to use GoogleMaps as a GPS, but it’s a bit strange when your phone is yelling the direction (turn right on whatever street …).
So, I prefer to have the instructions straight in my ear thanks to my bluetooth Era earpiece (by Jawbone).
It’s handy, discreet and you can leave your phone in your pocket.
GoogleMaps is great for this with its audio guidance, and it’s totally free (no in-app purchase after one month!).
I like to use it with the Yelp app (where you can find anything you are looking for, from a restaurant to sporting goods shop and it works around the world!).
So basically
1. I get the address through Yelp (I have reviews, pictures, infos about the schedule)
2. I copy the address
3. I open GoogleMaps and paste the address.
Then let you guide by the girl, she knows the way!!!

Googlemaps, itineray Googlemaps, itineray Googlemaps, itineray

Try it! It works if you are walking, biking and driving.
If you are in a big city like Paris, London, NY, … and are using ground transportation. Try the free app Citymapper (no audio guidance but cool to see you on the subway map and checking the stations left).

Happy travels.

Stop losing, start finding!

Some weeks ago I backed the Chipolo project on Kickstarter (check the review “If the bluetooth tag is blue, red, yellow or … it’s a Chipolo!“).
I chose the #YouNameIt package which gives the possibility to customise the 4 Chipolo Bluetooth chips with a name (I love it).

And here they are, just landed in my mailbox! I’ve been playing with it for some days now.

I opened the package, downloaded the app on iTunes and started assigning the Chipolo to its task.
The app offers the choice between 7 icones (key, car, home, chip, heart, handbag and pet). It’s like when you play the Monopoly and choose your metal token.
I configured my first green @ChaseItOrBChase Chipolo as a key.

Chipolo Chipolo image

The icons allows you to distinguish your different Chipolos.

The motto of Chipolo is “Nothing is lost” and you Chipolo will help you track down you stuff.
When the Chipolo is in close range you can make it beep by tapping the horn on your Chipolo app.image
When you leave your Chipolo behind, it will beep and even sent you a message on your phone.
If you still forget your Chipolo somewhere, open the app and tap on the magnifier and find the timing and the address where your Chipolo was last “seen”.
Cherry on the cake, the Chipolo will also give the temperature!

Great features for a great price (24€ for 1 Chipolo, 44€ for 2, 64€ for 3, 84€ for 4)!!

Good to know:
. Distance max between you iPhone and Chipolo is 60feet
. You can configure for each Chipolo with the following features
.. In range notification
.. Out of range notification
.. Shake and find notification
. By the way, the connexion between you iPhone or Android phone is Bluetooth so even if you don’t use data outside home, you will be able to find your Chipolo and that’s way cool.

F.y.i., my green Chipolo is hooked to my work badge (to help me not forgetting it on my desk and beg a colleague to badge me in), my yellow is hanging in my bedroom and gives me the temp, my red</strong> is not yet attributed and my white is a gift for my brother.

d9e407083c9ac18b017a0af3a016abee_large-1We all use Bluetooth. Bluetooth, to connect our cell phone to our Bluetooth headphones, to our Bluetooth speakers, to a Bluetooth printer …

But now Bluetooth tags start to flourish and appear all over the market.
It started with The TileApp (that works only with iPhones, when the battery dies so does your tile, 18,99$), the StickNFind (for iPhones and Android, working within a 100 feet range, with replaceable battery, 6 colors to pick from, 2 stickNFind by pack for 49,99$) and now, the brand new Kickstarter project Chipolo .

The Chipolo already gathered more than 1.200 backers, and exploded its 15K$ objective in less than 4 days climbing up to 53K$, and my educated guess tells me it’s just the the start.

How will the Chipolo Bluetooth tags change your life?
. The Chipolo can fetch your phone just by shacking it. How cool is that?
. Chipolo comes in 9 different colors. Matching your purse, backpack or dog collar, … won’t be an achievement! I would go for green!
. When the battery dies, just replace it and continue to use your Chipolo tag (handy and eco-habit)
. The Chipolo tag comes with a built-in temperature sensor (kind of a Bluetooth tag which got married to a Thermodo and had a child … I love this feature)
. The Chipolo tags will be available by December 2013 , then January 2014.

Price: 24$ if you preorder on Kickstarter before Nov 15th, then the retail price will be 34$

I think I definitively need the Chipolo Bluetooth tag and I’ll hang it at my office badge that I keep forgetting home!
