Runkeeper vs Shine from Misfit

8 Apr

2015-04-08 17.43.40Last morning, I decided to landsurf my Biscuit board on the  Rickenbauer bridge in Keybiscayne, Florida.

It seemed far to me and my calves but I wasn’t sure. I decided then to download the free app RunKeeper and dropped the phone in the pocket of my bermuda. I tied my Shine tracker on my shoes laces and hopped on my board surfing the cement asKelly Slatter on the waves (I’m day-dreaming a bit …).

The objective was to compare the results from RunKeeper with my Shine and see which one was the more accurate.

The RunKeeper app is a great app and gives you the basics:

  • your run/skate cruise on the map
  • it makes a great impression on colleagues and friends,
  • it give you your average speed,
  • and a woman’s voice covers up the music and gives you useful infos every 5 minutes (speed, km or miles).

The Shine can be worn as a wristband or tied to my shoes on its clip (I decided to try both).

    • Tied on the shoes the Shine is more accurate as I push with my foot,

  • My  activity was categorised as “pretty active” during 1,1 hour for a total of 976 points. While worn on the wrist, I was “pretty active” for 29 minutes and “kind of active” for 22 minutes which earned me a global 123 points.

Let’s say that the GPS of my RunKeeper app beats it all. And it’s so cool to have a map of your run/skakeboarding path.

My Shine is nowhere near the truth …

ChaseItOrBChased 2014 xmas list

1 Dec

And it’s this period of the year again when we send Santa hints about what we would like to receive in our socks our under the xmas tree.
I prefer to play it safe and to write a letter with references of the products that I would like, as well as straight links to the website … Mom if you read this, you now know what to do 😉

1. To be on time at the office and to do much more with a watch than with a regular watch, I definitively need the Apple Watch. It will be released early 2015 and I decided to go for the Sport Watch (silver aluminum case with the green band). Starting at $399.
2. When all is out, and there’s no more electricity, I definitively need the Yeti Solar 150 generator by GoalZero (it works with the Nomad 20 Solar Panel). It will tackle the 911 situations when I need to charge my MacBook Pro, my iPad and iPhone and hubby’s tech gears too. Priced at $199

3. Beddit by Misfit is great to spy on my sleep. Heartbeat, deep sleep vs light sleep and awakening periods. You’ll have it all on the app.
No more discussion if you snore or not, the app will know it all!
Just wrap the band around your mattress and go to bed counting sheeps, the Beddit will do the rest. $149, available now.
4. I already own the Biscuit (I love it, it follows me everywhere like my shadow) and I would like to experience a longer board. My eyes fell on the Pescadito by Hamboards. This model is priced $425.

5. To run like a rabbit on the treadmill at the gym, I would like the Nike Lunarglide6 Flash3.
They are also really cool if you wear them outside at night as they are reflecting in low light, $140.
6. I’m into reflection big time and the Gear-016 Dots 3M socks will be a great match with my Nike. The socks are organic with 3M reflective dots, $16.

It’s squeaking!

Biscuit by HamboardsAs you may know, I’m a beginner at land-surfing and this summer was dedicated to masterize the art of standing on a board without breaking my leg, arm or wrist.

Biscuit by HamboardsI must admit I succeeded after a lot of patience and hours of practice.

Now, as any board, mine is squeaking a bit, and I hate that!

So I went on YouTube to find the solution and apparently the key is to use household paraffin. I decided to hike to CVS and the only paraffin I found was “Hawaiian scent”, so let’s go to Hawaii.
Basically, the guy on YouTube said to peel the paraffin with a cutter and cover the bolts and nuts with the paraffin chips. It smelled good, worked a bit but I wasn’t fully satisfied as it was still squeaking …

… still squeaking until the big Pete Hamborg from Hamboards shared with me one of his secrets and I will Biscuit by Hamboardsshare his enlightenment with you too!
To stop squeaking, use lip balm!

I clean my bolts and nuts from the paraffin and started the process all over again with the lip balm and … I’m back to land-surfing in peace and silence, it worked!!!

If you are not into skateboard, this works too with a squeaking door … Just saying.

PS: Thanks Pete!!!

I’m a landsurfer … almost

9 Sep

Hey,
Check it out! I’ve been practicing very hard to stand and have the style on my Biscuit by Hamboards.

Land-surf 101!

8 Sep

Landsurfing on the Hamboards BiscuitI always wanted to skate, but I missed the opportunity and inline-skated instead, then I was too busy to give it a shot.
I thought skating was not for me, thinking again skating is not for me BUT land-surfing IS!
I just received my Biscuit from the Californian family company called Hamboards.

The model is the Biscuit Hamboo.

The first thing I must say is it’s a beautiful board, a piece of art, so beautiful I want to hang it on the wall.
Just looking at it you can tell someone built it with love and care.

Not just anyone because each board is signed by its maker and this time mine have been made by Tory Johnson (thanks TJ!).

Time to check it out in the wild

Signed and numbered

The board is covered with a grainy/satin coating while the back is smooth and shiny with the name of board, its very own unique number, the signature of its maker and the green wheels and trucks.

Tag along to see if I’ll make it in one piece and become a land-surfer.

Practicing in the wild

Practicing in the wild, barefoot then with shoes

Day #1, let’s find the balance and the foot which will push. I stayed safely on a carpet, it was easier …

Day #2, let’s start to push a bit and stay on the board, I was practicing in a hallway on wooden floor. I pushed on the wall to gain “speed” and help myself with the balance. I started my first attempts to pump but was not at ease as I lost balance.

Day #3, let’s try to look “surfy” and go in the open wild boardwalk.
I found a great spot in Santa Monica with a small slope, great to try the carving (it looked like a hill to me, but it was small).
I fall a bit, scratched my feet (I was barefoot) and board but that’s part of the process. No pain, no gain. Nothing serious and definitively lots of fun and progress.

Day #4, back on the board (this time with shoes) and trying to improve the push/pump and carve. I’ll make it!

So, is land-surfing for anyone?
YES! But like anything else it takes a bit of patience to get the hang of it.
I’m now a land-surfer in becoming and I love it!!!
Practicing hard now to be matching Hamboards values and spirit of the land-surfing.
Now I can push, pump and carve, need to work on the style 😉

PS: get this tool that will help you tighten all the screws, nuts and bolts of your board to surf safely. Mine is green matching the color of my wheels.

Also, add helmet and wrists protection so your mom will be relieved 😉

SKATING + SURFING + ART = HAMBOARDS

Land-surfing on a Biscuit ?

14 Jul

HamboardsI am a city girl, I only see the beach once a year at best and I’m not great with cold waters.
I always dreamed about surfing the waves but when you live 2 hours away from the first cold and flat water … It’s not that easy.
So let’s find another dream or … let’s surf without water?
Let’s become a land-surfer! Yes, that’s what I want to be: a landsurfer!!!

Now that I know my path, I need the proper board. I wanted to buy a Penny skate to cruise, but it’s only to cruise from one point to another, not much fun in it, … still looking until I found THE board!!
It’s build by a family owned company called Hamboards, and cherry on the cake they are from Huntington Beach, California (the capital of the surf)!
The Californian dream under your feet!!
Pete, the father, is a firefighter, Gus is the oldest son and Don is the cousin taking care of the management and they build all together the best land-surfing boards of the market.

The Hamboards range includes 5 products: the Classic, the Pinger, the Fish, the Pescadito and the Biscuit.
Each, of course, have their very own specs:
. carving,
. cruising,
. nose riding like on a real surf!,
. pumping … again like on a real surf!!
. and of course portability
Check this Hamboards video on how to choose your board.

My mind is set on the pumping property and portability because
. I want to feel like surfing
. I take the metro so it needs to fit under my arm … The Biscuit is for me!

Next time we talk about the Hamboards, I’ll have a Biscuit to talk about and we will share the crumbs 😉

The California dream goes downtown!
