I want to be a land-surfer!

28 Jul

HamboardsWhat is a land-surfer ? It’s a person who, because there’s no water around, surfs the concrete instead of the waves!
But there’s a BUT, the land-surfer needs a board. And that’s where he/she is lost in the forest of longboards. So many choices, so many wheels, shapes and boards …

Hamboards is THE reference when it comes to land-surfing and I asked some questions to the man behind the Pete Hamborg, HamboardsHamboards, THE Pete Hamborg to understand better the concept of land-surfing.

How you choose the wood ? The paint ? What is important for you when you start building a board ?

We chose the wood very carefully because of the size and span of the design of a Hamboard. It requires a uber dense wood.

Initially when we first came up with the concept after months and months of searching, find the right wood was so hard that I actually gave up the hope of ever finding what we needed. The wood we need is so difficult to find, it’s either in fine stranded carbonized bamboo or micro layered birch plywood.

So with both wood and the paint from the very start, as a family, we have strived to have the design and the production of Hamboards be at that unique intersection of Skating, Surfing and Art. Hamboards

Coming from that perspective we carefully choose colors, tones, grain patterns, and designs that reflect that intersection.

The final coat of paint that has the deck grip texture is very important. We have pioneered the use of Ultra Violet light as a curing agent which is way better than gnarly airborne chemicals typical of our industry. It is the same, safe but complex and expensive technology, that your dentist uses to harden your filings. By the way…don’t forget to floss.

Why is barefoot land-surfing important ? Are you the only board to be rideable barefoot ? What’s the wood treatment to do so ?

Also barefoot

Also barefoot

We love to land-surf barefooted because of the direct responsive connection we feel when it is skin to board, just like when we surf in the ocean. But you don’t have to be barefoot to ride a Hamboard – we wear shoes or flip flops all the time.

We don’t recommend soccer cleats or golf spikes however on an occasional Thursday nite I wear a sequined pair of low heeled pumps — open or closed toed depending on the conditions. I hope to graduate to medium heels and eventually high heels. I’ll keep you advised on my progress …

what? Good to know!

Where is the nest ? Whe do you make the boards ?

All Hamboards are assembled in our shop in Huntington Beach by family members or our local Hamboardscrew. We are super fortunate to have a location near the ocean and close to our house. We also have nearby wood and paint shops here in Southern California help out with the production as well as local factories produce all our wheels.

For your info, if you are around the shop is opened from 12:00-5:00 pm, Mon-Fri (8606 Hamilton Ave. HB, CA 92646, tel: (714) 374-2200)

How did you give the name to each board ?

The naming of each board is a family involved process and everyone gives input. It always seems to revolve around the surf boards we ride or how we ride them.
. The Classic has the connection to the classic style of hanging ten and drop knee turning that riding a Classic Hamboard flows with.
. The Fish model looks and feels like the surfboards we ride and love that are know to surfers as “Fish”. . The Pinger is a nod to evocative 1970s surfboards know as “Winger Pintails” so we smashed the name together and spun it around and can came up with “Pinger”.
. Pescadito is Spanish for “Little Fish”. The Huntington Hop is a locally infamous surf maneuver.
. And The Biscuit is a take off on the name of a short carvy surfboard we ride.

On a bright day of July 18th 2014, a new baby board is born at Hamboards, the newbie is called Huntington Hop and is there to show the world how a normal sized Longboard skateboard should be made!Hamboards

Next review will be over my trial of the Biscuit. Yes! I will be a land-surfer!!
